Cherbaka Scholarship: Congratulations to Billy Vinette

Billy Vinette, who is a PhD candidate in nursing at the Faculty of Nursing of the Université de Montréal, has been awarded the Jeffrey Michael Cherbaka 2020 Scholarship.
Accompanying patients with hematological cancer
Being also a research assistant at the Faculty of Nursing of the Université de Montréal, the scholarship will allow Billy Vinette to develop her knowledge so that nurses can better support and accompany young adults suffering from hematological cancer.
Educating patients, adapting care
After a transplant of hematopoietic stem cells—the stem cells that “make” blood—, patients need to learn how to manage their symptoms.
Through one-on-one interviews, Billy Vinette has identified characteristics associated with the development of the necessary expertise in these young adults. Ultimately, these results will make it possible to better adapt care to this clientele and promote their autonomy.
With his work, he hopes to influence the quality of care provided to this clientele by oncology nurses across Quebec.
About the Jeffrey Michael Cherbaka Scholarship
Jeffrey Michael Cherbaka
Jeffrey Michael Cherbaka was born on December 23, 1971. He is the son of Michèle and Norman G. Cherbaka and the brother of Bob and Eric.
He was educated at Augustin-Roscelli School, Collège Laval and Collège André-Grasset. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the Université de Montréal and a law degree from the University of Ottawa. He was, until his death, a partner in the law firm Girouard, Peris, Pappas, Sutton, Prihoda, Dickson. He passed away on May 26, 2000 after a brief but courageous battle with leukemia.
Jeffrey lived to the fullest despite his short life. He was a determined young man who was not afraid to take risks to achieve his dreams. His relentless fight to the end against the disease made him the greatest hero in the hearts of his family and friends.
His parents created this scholarship, awarded annually, to honour him and to encourage brilliant students like their son was.
