Montréal Passion Vin Supporting Sarcoma Patients

The solidarity demonstrated by participants during Montréal Passion Vin week will make a concrete contribution to improving care management for patients with musculoskeletal tumours (sarcomas) at the Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont (HMR).

The HMR has become specialized in the treatment of bone and muscle tumours

The HMR’s team of multidisciplinary sarcoma treatment experts are specialized in bone and muscle tumours. These include over 110 subtypes, including Ewing’s sarcoma, osteosarcoma and other malignant tumours affecting the entire musculoskeletal system.

Each year, 800 to 1,200 patients are diagnosed with musculoskeletal tumours at the HMR, more than a quarter of which are malignant tumours. All too often, by the time the diagnosis is made, it’s already too late and the disease has metastasized.

The project, led by Dr. Sophie Mottard, Dr. Jonathan Noujaim and their colleagues, aims to make more and better diagnoses, and above all, to make them more quickly, to save more lives.

An educational component will enable them to continue their work in the field, in order to optimize the referral system for these patients, improve access to diagnostic imaging and continue teaching primary care physicians. A basic research component, including a tumour tissue biobank, will help to improve our fundamental knowledge of the genetics of these tumours, and work to develop new targeted therapies in collaboration with other universities across the country.
